When it comes to pleasant towns catering to the art of relaxation, in my opinion, no one does it better than the Germans. This may be tied into history as far back as Ancient Rome. As the Roman Empire expanded throughout Europe, Romans of elite status took note of the region having a plethora of thermal springs, rich in minerals that promote healing and relaxation after waging war on the Germanic tribes of the north. Since public baths was a large part of Roman culture which daily activities were carried out, it didn't take long for the Romans to utilize the mineral rich, thermal springs to construct public baths in these conquered regions. In Italy, you can see many ruins of ancient bathhouses throughout the land, but most of them are archeological sites giving a glimpse into how these ancient people lived. There are still spa towns in Italy such as "Montecatini Terme" in Tuscany. In Germany, that tradition is alive and well. If you take a look at a map, you will notice that there are many with the word "Bad" or "Baden." which are actually the German words for "bath" and "bathe." These are towns that are recognized for bathing culture. Most famous being the beautiful town of Baden-Baden in southwestern Germany in the state of Baden-Wurttemberg. Between the name of the town and the state, the word "bath" appears 3 times. Another town also in the Black Forest Region, is called "Bad-Wildbad." In fact, there are over 350 towns in Germany that have earned the title "Bad" or "Baden," 3 of which are part the UNESCO World Heritage Site for "The Great Spa Towns of Europe," which includes "Baden-Baden," "Bad Ems," and "Bad Kissingen." And before I did say "earned." These towns have been officially designated by the German government which have a long history of spa resorts and have to meet specific health and environmental standards. Prior to the 2 World Wars in the 20th Century, these were highly sought after destinations to go on holiday by royalty and the wealthy class. Aside from the thermal spas themselves, these towns feature beautiful architecture, gorgeous scenery, and plenty of food to go around. Even in most of the spas, there are bars and restaurants serving 3 meals, coffee, snack, and yes, alcoholic beverages. So, if you are interested in more than just "site seeing" tours and really want to experience a land that has mastered the art of relaxation, please reach out and contact us for more information on some of these amazing locations today.
